Analysis of Binders and Conductivity Aids


It is important for the satisfactory demonstration of design performance as well as for other objectives that a binder and a conductivity aid be dispersed uniformly in an active material. It is also important, likewise, to accurately grasp to what extent a binder was used in the electrode sheet. We have conducted various analyses using the cathodes of commercially available batteries.

Observation of an electrode with high resolution (very low speed acceleration SEM)

  • It was made possible to observe the fine structure of the surface with high resolution by bringing acceleration voltage to a very low acceleration voltage of 1kV or lower.
  • It was possible to confirm the presence of two types of conductivity aids (fine amorphous, graphite powder) through the observation of the cathode surface.
  • It was also possible to clearly observe the dispersed condition of the binder.

Evaluation of conductivity aid crystallinity (microscopic Raman)

Determination of binder amount (TG-DTA)

It was presumed from TG-DTA that the amount of the binder used in the cathode was 5.8wt%.
