Summary

Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs) which evolve from adhesives and paints for architectural materials sometimes could have potential to cause the sick house syndrome. The sick house syndrome has been becoming the more serious issue due to the current remarkable progress of airtightness and insulation of houses.

ANAC has made the work partnership with KRI to launch the new analytical service to precisely measure VOCs like Formaldehyde from architectural materials using the small chamber modeled on a real house.

Characteristics of Test Apparatus and Analytical Methods

  • The test condition like heating temperature, humidity and air flow rate for Diffusion Test Device is precisely controlled.
    ANAC can provide customers with reliable date of long term analysis.
  • Background concentration of test apparatus is very low (TVOC >3.0μg/m3), therefore the emission rate of VOCs from architectural materials can be measured accurately.
  • A qualitative and quantity analysis are carried out independently (TCT-GC/MS and TCT-GC/FID), therefore ANAC can precisely analyze VOCs diffusing from a sample from the very low concentration range to the high concentration range.

Example -The high Concentration Case-

The analytical data of a diffusion gas concentration in the chamber acquired by ATD-GC/MS which is commonly used and by TCT-GC/FID which is owned by ANAC is shown in the graph.
ATD-GC/MS could not get the correct data due to the low efficiency in ionization in the detector.

On the other hand, the correct data was acquired by TCG-FID even at the higher range of concentration.
