Summary

It is possible to observe the phase separation structure of polymer alloys by the use of the dynamic force microscope (DFM). DFM, unlike the transmission electron microscope, does not require the use of ultrathin slice samples or dyeing treatment. The use of DFM makes it possible to obtain information beyond the range of spatial resolution of small angle X-ray scattering.

Principle

With DFM, there is a difference that is observable in phase between input signals and output signals, reflecting the adsorption power, hardness and softness of the surface of a test specimen. The utilization of DFM makes it possible, for example, to evaluate a difference in the viscoelasticity of the surface of an alloy material.

Example of analysis

Sample: PP/rubber alloy

Results: The area which is seen in a bright contrast in the phase image below is a rubber section, and the area which is seen in a dark contrast is the resin section. DFM makes an evaluation of the phase separation structure of a polymer alloy possible.

Application

The use of DFM is effective in making a spot evaluation of the change in the lamellar structure of the surface of a polymer by means of evaluating the interface thickness and measuring temperature variations at the polymer blend and bonding interfaces.
