Cross-Sectional Observation of Silicon-Based Solar Batteries

We prepared a cross section of a commercially available solar battery by the grinding method and observed it with the scanning electron microscope (SEM). This is effective in gaining an understanding of the overall structure of the sample and the shape of each component. Here it is possible to confirm the fibrous material that appears to be a reinforcing material on the cell side of Filling Material 2 and the thin layer at the filling material/back surface protection material. Furthermore, it is also possible to obtain local information on the elements by using energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX). As for organic materials, it is possible to quickly identify polymer species by FT-IR.

<IR spectrum of surface protection material> On the basis of a detailed analysis of the spectrum, it was presumed that the surface protection material was a fluorine-based resin.

<EDX spectrum of fibrous material in the filling material> The fibrous material was presumed to be glass fiber primarily because Si, O, Al and Ca were detected.
