Morphological Observation of Liquid Crystal Elements
with Atomic Force Microscope



The minute shape of the surface of liquid crystal cells in each step of the liquid crystal cell preparation process is observed by use of the atomic force microscope (AFM).

①Transparent electrode formed on a glass substrate by the sputtering method (ITO)
②This polyimide film formed on ITO by the spin coating method
③Oriented film obtained by conducting the rubbing treatment of polyimide film under specified conditions
Analytical method:
The shape is traced in the non-contact mode (tapping) AFM in such manner that the surface will not be damaged.

It was found that after the rubbing process, the rubbing marks were formed and the degree of smoothness increased.
