Analysis of PCB in Pigments

Print

Summary

In recent years, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) as a by-product formed in the process of manufacturing some organic pigments has become a problem. Since the manufacture, import and shipment of organic pigments are regulated, it is all the more important to accurately determine the amount of PCB. International standard: 50ppm or less

Analytical method

Pretreatment: Dispersion in hexane → sulfuric acid treatment → liquid/liquid extraction
Analytical method: Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS)
①Qualitative analysis: Scan mode (SCAN)
Screening by a comparison with the KC (Kanechlor) standard material
②Quantitative analysis: Selective ion mode (SIM)
The amount of PCB detected is determined by use of standard materials of chlorinated materials.

Example of analysis: Determination of the amount of PCB in Company X’s pigment
