Summary

Liquid crystal polymer (LCP) is one of the super engineering plastics that demonstrate excellent performance. LCP is characterized by good gas barrier properties and low moisture absorption properties. A number of LCPs with different structures are available in the market. However, it is difficult to accurately determine the structured by a common method. By utilizing pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) on the basis of a wealth of expertise in polymer, we can provide data that will enable you to make an accurate judgment on the composition of LCPs.

Classification of LCP

There are three types* of LCP.

* Copolymers based on para-hydroxybenzoic acid.
They are classified into major categories according to the components that are copolymerized for the purpose of lowering the melting point.

The pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy of a commercially available LCP with a derivatizing agent added was carried out. As a result, the structure of the LCP was presumed to be that of Type (2) which was a copolymer of para-hydroxybenzoic acid and hydroxynaphthoic acid (HNA).
